In 1860, a young London printmaker was commissioned to illustrate a book about the Alps. He travels to Switzerland and in Zermatt he sees for the first time the Matterhorn, a perfect pyramid of rock that rises on the border between Switzerland and Italy, and whose summit at that time still remains unscaled.
The encounter with the impressive mountain will change the course of your life: from this moment Edward Whymper begins a fight to conquer the inaccessible summit. Climb intensely in the Alps, getting numerous first ascents to some of the iconic peaks: Pointe des Ecrins, Dent Blanche or Aiguille Verte.
Thus Whymper becomes one of the best climbers of his time, predestined to change the course of mountaineering history. After numerous attempts, on July 14, 1865, he finally reached the top of the Matterhorn along with six companions. Unfortunately, the great victory is clouded by a tragic accident: during the descent an unfortunate slip leads to a broken rope and four men plunge into the abyss of the fearsome north face. Whymper and two guides miraculously escape death.
In 1871 Whymper published in London Scrambles among the Alps in the Years 1860-1869, an extensive chronicle of his alpine exploits, from which this book extracts all the fragments relating to the conquest of the Matterhorn. Illustrated with magnificent engravings by the famous mountaineer, it is an absolute classic of Alpine literature and an indispensable volume in any mountaineer’s library.
